You probably don't think of your dentist as a magician, but with CEREC technology, Drs. Ruocco make porcelain crowns and onlays magically appear in one dental visit. Having a crown or onlay created and placed used to require at least two visits because the porcelain pieces had to be made in an off-site dental lab. We create CEREC one-visit crowns in-house during your visit, meaning no more waiting for that new smile. And perhaps even better—you don’t have to endure those seemingly endless minutes of the mouthful of goop that was necessary to get a clear impression of your tooth for a traditional crown.
What does CEREC stand for?
CEREC is the acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, or CEramic REConstruction. CEREC uses CAD-CAM technology to visualize, design and fabricate your new tooth restoration.
How does CEREC work?
A computerized system in our office creates your CEREC one-visit crowns quickly. First, a special intraoral digital camera takes pictures of your tooth. These virtual images are then transferred to the CEREC computer where special software designs your crown or onlay. The design accounts for the size, shape and color of your restoration.
Next, the milling unit turns a porcelain block that matches your tooth's natural color into a custom-fitted crown. This takes only 15 to 20 minutes, and if you like you can watch your restoration in production. Finally, we check to make sure your new crown or onlay fits well and then we bond the restoration to your tooth. No need for multiple appointments in the dentist's chair when you’re receiving a CEREC crown.
How should you care for your new CEREC dental crowns?
CEREC restorations are not only convenient and attractive, they are also extremely durable when cared for properly. Dental porcelain is quite strong, however it can crack or chip. So, we suggest you try not to use your new dental crown to chew hard objects, such as ice cubes and hard candy.
Continue to brush and floss your teeth as you usually do, but be sure to pay special attention to the area where your crown meets the gum tissue. This is a spot where plaque can easily accumulate and lead to tooth decay or gum disease.
Ruocco Dental knows you value your time, so we make the most of it with CEREC one-visit crowns and onlays. The magic of modern technology gets you in and out in no time.
