Quality H20 — Something to smile about!

Do you drink bottled water? Why? Bottled water does not contain fluoride, while most city water does. Fluoride is an important mineral that strengthens your teeth against tooth decay. Children, in particular, need fluoride for strong teeth, but many parents use bottled water to mix baby formula. For older kids, water offers a quick, do-it-yourself drink straight from the tap. It's sufficiently healthier than sports drinks and sodas, which contain a lot of sugar.

But there's a bigger, global case backing tap water as the colorless, odorless, tasteless beverage of choice:

  • It takes 1.5 million barrels of crude oil to produce water bottles each year
  • 60 million plastic water bottles end up in landfills each year
  • A plastic water bottle can take up to 1000 years to biodegrade
  • If you reuse water bottles, there's a good chance that the polyethelone terephthalate they're composed of leeches into the water you refill your bottles with
  • Public water suppliers have to report daily as to the safety of their water, while bottled water supplies are checked by the FDA weekly (see info on your state's public water supply at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/dwinfo/index.html)
  • Bottled water costs 500 to 1000 times more than tap water

Tap water is looking better and better, isn't it? If you have concerns about drinking tap water, there are many filtration devices available, some that attach right to your faucet. One thing is certain, if you choose to drink bottled water over tap water, talk to your dentist. It's important that he or she know so that you can determine together how to make sure you, and your family, are receiving the fluoride you need for healthy teeth.
